Auto Insurance Explained

What You Need to Know Before You Buy Auto Insurance

AUTO INSURANCE COVERAGE

Coverage For All Circumstances

If you own a vehicle, you need auto insurance.

Auto insurance provides financial protection for you and your vehicle if you are in an accident, if your car is stolen or your vehicle is otherwise damaged. It may also pay for part or all of any damages you cause to another driver. Understanding car insurance can help you make informed decisions about what coverage best suits your needs, so keep reading to learn more about the types of auto insurance.

Liability

What Does Liability Insurance Cover?

Liability coverage is legally required in almost every state.

  • What liability covers: the cost to repair another driver’s vehicle and related medical expenses resulting from an accident that you cause.
  • What liability doesn’t cover: the cost of repairs to your vehicle or your medical expenses resulting from an accident that you cause.
  • Liability is usually the lowest level of insurance coverage you can have. Keep in mind that if you have a lien holder on your vehicle – in other words, you are still making payments on your car – you are likely required to have more coverage. This means liability insurance does not provide enough coverage to meet these requirements.

COVERAGE LIMITS

What Do Coverage Limits 100/300/50 Mean?

Sometimes also called “coverage amount,” this is the maximum amount that your insurance will pay in a claim.

  • Liability coverage limits are set by each state, but you may choose to exceed those limits when purchasing your policy.

  • Coverage limits are typically displayed in your policy information as a series of numbers such as 100/300/50. These numbers represent the max amounts that will be paid per person or per incident.

COVERAGE LIMITS

100/300/50 Explained:

100
Up to $100,000 paid per person for bodily injuries in an accident.
300
Up to $300,000 paid for all bodily injuries in an accident.
50
Up to $50,000 paid for damages to another driver's vehicle.

When selecting these limits, be sure and consider your own financial situation, state required minimums, and the value of your own vehicle.
